GR 16 A passage between two worlds

Collado del Santo

Sierra Ferrera is a great natural wall 20 km long that divides the eastern part of Sobrarbe into two sectors with very distinct landscapes. To the North, the limestone massif of Cotiella gives rise to deep gorges and canyons, rugged ochre mountains with steep cliffs, caves, karst springs and dense green forests.

However, in the South, the grey marl and clay landscapes of La Fueva alternate heights with gullies and torrents, creating a low, extremely irregular but much drier and intensely humanized landscape. The Santo Mountain Pass makes it possible to cross this apparently impregnable rocky barrier that divides both worlds and, incidentally, unravel part of the complicated geological structure of Mount Montañesa and the Ferrera Mountains.

A long journey to see a little known corner of the Geopark with the incentive of visiting the magnificent church of San Juan de Toledo, declared of a Site of Cultural Interest.

  • Route: San Juan de Toledo de la Nata - Santo Mountain Pass on the PR HU-139.
  • Type of Route:Linear (return along the same route).
  • Difficulty level: Medium, but the time required and its steepness make it a major route.
  • Duration: 3.5 hours (up) and 2 down.
  • Length: 12 kilometres (round trip)
  • Gradient: 950 metres
  • Starting point San Juan de Toledo. To reach this point, we must take the road to Atiart that exits the N -260 road between Aínsa and Foradada de Toscar at the 422 milestone. From Atiart there are indications to San Juan de Toledo.
  • Comments The town of San Juan is small and there are few places to park either at the entrance to the town or at the church. From the Santo Mountain Pass, it may by a good idea to dedicate another 15 minutes to reach Mount Blanca, which offers better views of both sides, although there is no marked path to the peak. This is a long route. The map provided is only for reference purposes; therefore, it is advisable to take a more detailed map on the route.
