GR 6 Sobrarbe at your feet

Ascaso- Nabaín

This route begins in the secluded town of Ascaso and climbs to the Nabaín heights, where there is one of the best natural viewpoints in Sobrarbe as well as the ruins of the chapel of Santa Marina. Nabaín is precisely the highest point of the Boltaña anticline, a huge fold along which this route runs and the internal structure of which exposes the River Ara at Foz de Jánovas.

But the Boltaña anticline hides much more than is apparent: its structure and position are key to under- standing how the Pyrenees were formed. Along the path of this unfreuented route, we shall encounter some of the keys to understanding what the Boltaña anticline is and how it formed and why it is so important from a geological point of view.

Furthermore, each of the stops will reward us with incredible views of Solana and Ribera de Jánovas, of the Mount Perdido massif and much of the central area of the District of Sobrarbe.

  • Route: Ascaso - Chapel of Santa Marina de Nabaín.
  • Type of Route: Linear (return along the same route).
  • Difficulty level: Medium. The track is not difficult, but it is steep in some places and difficult to follow in other sections.
  • Duration: 2.5 hours. (one way) The return hike, always downhill, requires another 1.5 hours.
  • Length 7 kilometres (round trip).
  • Gradient: 820 metres.
  • Starting point: STARTING POINT: Lay-by on the road that leads into the town of Ascaso. To reach the town, take the turn-off indicated at the milestone 447.300 of the N-260 road between Boltaña and Fiscal, about three and a half kilometres west of Boltaña. The road is narrow and although tarmacked in the beginning it becomes a track that can be accessed by all types of vehicles (a 4WD is not required). Do not park in the square in Ascaso because this can make access difficult for the inhabitants; therefore, it is advisable to leave the car at one of the lay-bys before arriving in the town.
  • Comments There are no fountains along the entire route, except at Ascaso. It is not advisable to do this route in foggy conditions because the track could be difficult to follow, and you would not be able to enjoy the views, one of the main attractions of the route. Late afternoon is when the sunlight will enable us to appreciate more details of the views. RELATED GEO-ROUTES: this route is complemented by Geo-Route 4 and 7 and with an information panel located next to Boltaña Castle.
